Every year, approximately 22 million United States workers are exposed to hazardous noise levels at work. Over 30 million U.S. workers are exposed to chemicals, which can be harmful to hearing. In addition to damaging workers’ overall quality of life, occupational hearing loss carries a high economic price to society. The NIOSH (the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health) recommends occupational noise exposure to be no more than 85 decibels for eight consecutive hours. At a 3-decibal exchange rate, exposures at or above this level are considered hazardous.
